Why Eat Farmed Oyters?

Obviously they're delicious. But farmed oysters are good for more than just your taste buds.

Good for your health

Pound-for-pound, oysters are one of the most nutritious foods you can eat. They're packed with protein, vitamins and minerals, omega-3 fatty acids, and anti-oxidants, which means they're good for your heart, brain, liver, muscles, and more. Some say they're also an aphrodisiac, but we'll let you be the judge of that one.

Good for local ecosystems

Both farmed and wild oysters clean our waters and provide habitat for fish and other wildlife. Farmed oysters have the added benefit of reducing fishing pressure on wild oysters so they can do their thing even better. That's important since wild oysters are currently at levels of 15-20% of historical highs.

Good for our community

Along with improving the health of our residents and coastal ecosystems, oyster farming contributed nearly $15 million of GDP to NC's economy and supported more than 200 jobs in coastal NC in 2022. Growing the industry translates directly to growing our local economy.

Good for the planet

Many NC oysters travel 100's or even 1000's of miles inland or north before they're consumed. "Keeping it local" can help reduce the carbon footprint of the NC oyster industry. Our CSA model also cuts down on waste - since you order ahead of time, we order only what you ask for from our suppliers. That means less (or no) oysters go uneaten.
